NEVER FORGET THE WOMEN OF ELEPHANT & CASTLE

The Elephant will never forget these extraordinary women, now remembered in an AR installation.

DPS alumnus Rosie Mitchell and Pearl Gerald are taking part in the London Design Festival 2023 and simultaneously demystifying design for a local audience in Southwark. Working with spatial designer Irene Martin, Rosie and Pearl have focused on gender empowerment through public intervention during their degree in the Design School at LCC from which they have recently graduated.

An AR immersive experience of the most emblematic local marks of Elephant & Castle emphasising the contribution of women through time.                                   This Augmented Reality immersive experience stems from a research project conducted by Irene Martín at the University of the Arts London that aims to tackle accessibility and inclusivity in art through the use of emerging technologies. The research investigates the role of AR (Augmented Reality) as an emerging technology in museums, galleries, archives and art spaces.

The immersive experience has been designed by Irene Martín, Pearl Gerald and Rosie Mitchell and it explores Augmented Reality as a design tool for creative practitioners to tell stories in new and engaging ways and for audiences to access and experience Elephant & Castle and beyond to discover ‘unseen and untold’ history and influence of women in the area.
